Crime
The Crime genre is focused on unlawful acts of people in fiction and non-fiction. It can focus on a Criminal, Detective, or someone involved in the act. Crime has suspense, mystery, investigation, and murder. Common techniques used in this Genre are red herrings, increasing conflicts, foreshadowing, and time running out. The protagonists is usually not likeable or flawed. The antagonist sometimes is revealed early or not made clear till the end.
The Great Train Robbery (1903)
This was the first crime Genre movie and was a pioneer for film directed by Georges Méliès . They used techniques such as cross cutting, panning, and close ups. It introduced cross cutting to film in general, they also introduced longer films, and increased story telling.
The Musketeers of pig alley (1912)
This was the a silent crime film directed by DW Griffith. It is about Snapper kid recognizing someone that had previously robbed him. The one that robbed him was part of a mob shootout later in the film. In this they used focus on moving close ups, deep focus in tight settings, and innovative framing.
Little Caesar (1931)
This movie directed by Mervyn LeRoy is about Caesar Bandello and Joe Massara. They have conflict and this leads to Caesar's loss of power. This marks the end of his leadership in the gang and has a deadly conflict. This movie has left the blueprint for most mobster movie's showing the rise and fall of power.
The Public Enemy (1931)
The Public Enemy directed by William A. Wellman is a crime, mystery, and mob or gangster film. This film follows Tom a Chicago hoodlum and follows his rise to a bootlegger then a getting caught up in gang warfare. The Public Enemy covered cultural problems from 1930 such as racism, socially conscious hip-hop, and political injustice.
The Godfather parts I and II (1972+1974) These movies directed by Francis Ford Coppalo are considered to the be best films of all time. They focus from a transition from war hero to mob boss and immigrant to New York crime boss. The story line is very clever with stunning cinematography and great acting. This is the standard for the mob genre.
Once apon a time in America (1984)
This movie directed by Sergio Leone is a movie about about the growth of the protagonist Noodles in the Jewish slums becoming a mob boss. Throughout this there is lots of violence and and betrayal. People say this film is a masterpiece because it is filmed through the eyes of a Jewish Immigrant gangster.
Goodfellas (1990)
Goodfellas directed by Martin Scorsese is rated very high and considered one of the best crime movies of all time. In this movie the protagonist Henry Hill it shows his rise and fall of power and the luxurious life he lives. It also shows betrayal and many drug arrests. This movie is groundbreaking because of the fast pacing, great sound track, and the daily grind to the top then the immediate fall to the bottom.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction directed by the infamous Quentin Tarantino is wide regarded as one of best crime films. It uses a non-linear structure, pop culture dialogue, iconic characters, and stylish violence. In the movie there are a lot of main characters and the movie explores 4 main storylines. The movie shows how each storyline intertwines and becomes connected in the end.
Subgenres
There are many subgenres in the crime genre. The main genre's are psychological thrillers, heist/action, and detective or mystery genre's.
SE7EN (1995) Psychological thrillers
SE7EN directed by David Fincher explores the life of David Mills as he follows a serial killer. The killer leaves clues along the way and ends up getting caught. The detective thinks its over but it was all a part of the plan as David's wife was murdered. Leading to him giving what the killer wants, death. This movie is so highly regarded because of the plot twist, perfect pacing, creative writing, and a chilling atmosphere.
The Bling ring (2013)Heist/action/crime
The Bling ring directed by Sofia Coppallo is about a group of teenagers obsessed with celebities. Theis obession leads them to finding their houses and robbing their houses. It is a popular movie because of the film teqnuiges making it stylish and unique.
All the devils are here (2025) Thriller/Mystery
This movie driected by Barnaby Roper follows 4 criminals that have to lay low after a heist. The belive the problem is on the outside but in reality it is in the house. The reason why this movie has significance is because it's main premise is showing that greed never leads to anything good but in this it is supernatural evil.
Zodiac (2007) Thriller, Horror, Mystery, and Crime
Zodiac directed by David Fincher is a movie that is based on real events. It mainly focuses on an artist and detecive that try to uncover the killler's clues. The story focuses on the hunt of finding anwsers but has no satisfaction as he is never caught in the end.
The Scilence of the Lambs (1991)
The scilence of the Lambs directed by Johnathan Demme is about a new trainee that needs help from a serial killer to catch another killer. It is intense and messes with the protanist psyche. People consider is a great movie because of it's combination of horror, thriller, and crime elements. The cinematography uses extreme close-ups, eye line matching, and strategic framing catching everything nessacary.
